Approval

Have you ever wondered why we need approval?
Yearning for it as if our existence depended on it
Women sticking to turbulent relationships,
Striving hard to please Men who treat them with no respect;

It is happening all over our land and beyond
An apprentice slaving to please her boss,
A college student living above his means just to impress,
Worst still, are parents trying to imitate the Joneses;

Could we slow down a little please?
It’s all hustling and bustling everywhere
Why worship they that put us down,
And in the process losing our self worth for a pat on the back?

A large appetite for approval and conformity,
Leaves in its wake, a basketful of worms
Why cling perpetually to mirage?
Boot-licking all day for an half cent of acceptance;

I have been there, I have seen it all
What a lonely and agonizing experience,
But I survived it and I believe you can too,
Only if you’ll learn to love yourself.
